What to Bring

LETS MAKE SURE YOU ARE WELL-PREPARED AND READY TO ENJOY YOUR VISIT!

Bonanza Opal Mine is located at about 5300 ft. elevation in the northern Nevada desert. It's warm in the summer, and very arid. Here are some suggested items to bring with you:

  • Water bottles for drinking water. We have fresh ice-cold water at the canopy near the digging area
  • Adequate covering from the sun, including a hat and sun block (long-sleeved, light-weight shirts are helpful for those who are more sun-sensitive)
  • Bring cash or checks—we have no electricity or reception at the mine for debit/credit cards
  • Small rake, container-gardening type or child's rake (or rent from us)
  • Spray bottle with water for cleaning off dirt
  • Small containers to store your opals
  • Folding chair
  • Pad or mat to kneel/sit on (old dining or patio chair pad works well)
  • Gloves (cotton, gardening, or heavy, depending on your needs)
  • Snacks and lunch (a large canopy is available for resting and eating, or just enjoying a chat)
  • It can be very cool in the evenings and early morning during May and early June, and sometimes late in September. Bring layered clothing for visits during these times.
  • Bring rain gear for the occasional downpour.
